The managed care data presented in this article refer to contacts in physicians? main medical practices. The data exclude staff-model HMO employees, who comprise less than 3% of the total population of nonfederal, patient care physicians excluding residents. Participation measures include (1) the share of physicians in a practice with at least one managed care contract and (2) the share of total practice revenues attributable to managed care. Results are reported for three types of payers.
